World War One Letter Writing Project
"We were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces. The first bomb, the first explosion, burst in our hearts. We are cut off from activity, from striving, from progress. We believe in such things no longer, we believe in the war."
-Erich Maria Remarque

This project will ask students to examine the principles of basic friendly letter writing. They will take the information we have covered in class on World War One and write a letter from the perspective of a person who was living at the time under study. This can come in the form of a soldier who is fighting overseas, a woman at home writing about her experiences in a factory, or even a citizen writing a politician about his or her feelings on conscription. The possibilities are endless. The key will be for the student to stay in character and add historical context.
